Snake Attacks Chameleon in the Middle of the Road

This boomslang and chameleon had a wrestling match in the middle of the road, and in the end, only one came out alive!

“We were cruising along the S21 sand road looking for any of the predators that frequent this road. The wind blowing through the open windows and the sight of the many trees just set the perfect scene for a Kruger holiday. But all that came to an instant stop when my husband made a sudden stop and steered the vehicle to one side. What is it? What is it?”

“My husband pointed to the middle of the road, and no, it was not a lion or a leopard, but a snake! A fully grown boomslang is having a wrestling match with a chameleon in the middle of the road!”

“The chameleon, despite its size disadvantage, showed great resilience and fight. It took every blow from the venomous snake as if it were not affecting it. It tried its best to break free; biting and squirming, the chameleon really used every possible move.”

“The chameleon was not only able to take some strikes, but somehow it even managed to dodge a few of the lightning-fast attacks from the boomslang. We were sure that this was going to end as the perfect escape story, but nature doesn’t always follow the script, and after giving everything it had, the chameleon eventually tired. This gave the boomslang a perfect chance to deliver its kill shot. In the blink of an eye, the snake hit the chameleon with its fangs.”

As rare as this sighting is, it appears that lately boomslangs have taken a special liking to chameleons. Over the past few months, more and more of these sightings have been witnessed. Interestingly enough, the majority of them happen in the middle of the road. This could be perhaps due to the lack of camouflage the chameleons have when out in the open, making them easy to pick.

“After the snake was sure that the chameleon was not moving, it simply picked the chameleon up in its mouth and slithered away into the thick grass.”
